Eco House Series | Bedroom Pamper Products

As part of my new three-part series, 'Eco House' and in celebration of World Vegan Month, I'm showing you my favourite cruelty free picks from each room in my house! Everything from bathroom cleaners to my favourite vegan treats and make-up products. We'll start with the bedroom; my pamper products and make-up picks as it's been a tough few weeks for us all (with he-who-shall-not-be named elected) and we could all do with a little time off. Riiiiiight?!

A current favourite of mine is this Rio Rosa chiliean rosehip oil. The cold UK weather has sucked away any hydration my skin had left so I've been applying a little of this daily which has really helped clear things up! It's not too greasy and smells lovely and light- dare I say better than Odylique's serum?

Lush's R&B hair moisturiser is possibly one of my favourite hair products to date. You only need a little to rub in towel dried hair and I swear even if you avoided conditioner for a week this would fix the damage straight away! I pop on a little every time I wash my hair because it leaves my hair feeling repaired, soft and smelling great.

I was recently given this Odylique Avocado Replenishing Cream after showing so much love for the brand in this post, and I've been using this occasionally in the mornings (though not with any oils etc). It's super hydrating though stings a little if it goes onto cold or super dry skin so be careful! The formula is thick, creamy and perfect for replenishing your neck/face.

The best cruelty free items in my make-up bag come from a range of different companies. I'm on a SEVENTEEN hype at the moment and have some wintery looks in the works for you but Morphe, Urban Decay (screw you L'Oreal, but I got these almost a year ago), Inika, Lush, Neal's Yard, Anastasia Beverly Hills and L'or Des Pharaons are my other favourites on the list!

L'or Des Pharaons is a spray that helps other skincare products to absorb on a deeper level. Simply clean your face, spritz yourself with this mist- which I might add contains gold(!) among other pure metals, zinc, platinum- and you're good to go. It tackles signs of ageing from within your skin and feels really refreshing, I'm sure it helps to tighten pores as that's what it feels like, making applying foundation easier too.

My make-up brushes are made from bamboo with synthetic hair and you can similar ones on eBay or Amazon to name a couple!

Cruelty free living tip:
A lot of bedroom pillows and duvets contain down feathers. These are 80% of the time plucked from a duck. Sometimes pulled post-mortem, but often live as they can grow more feathers back. "Live plucking is exactly what it sounds like: a goose or duck is held down by their neck or wings as the “targeted feathers” are torn from their skin. When the skin rips during this process it is sewn up with a straight needle (no analgesic or sterilization used) and the bird is left to recover before the next “harvest of feathers.” This process is repeated every 6-7 weeks before the bird’s eventual slaughter or death from the trauma of the plucking process itself."- Gentle World.

I beggggg you, please don't buy into this cruelty. The more money we put into these products, the more we tell these companies that we want this cruelty to continue, all so we can have bedding with feathers in it. Fair? No. It's just like wearing fur, something that isn't ours to take and far from necessary. Purchase synthetic bedding instead, for that luxurious feel buy a higher tog duvet and cotton sheets!

Hopefully you found this post interesting or helpful if you're thinking of making the move to cruelty free beauty! There really is no reason to test on animals with the technology we have now. If Too Faced and Kat Von D can get by without animal testing, I'm sure everybody else can too.

There will be two more posts in this series covering kitchen and bathroom! If you have any questions or requests be sure to let me know :)

Feeling Fancy | #BonPrixontheRocks

My first two thoughts after receiving the invite to Bon Prix on the Rocks were something along the lines of 'OH MY GOD AN EVENT IN THE NORTH' and 'party time'! It's not often I get to doll myself up a little and go out (I'm in uni, I know it should be a regular occasion but clubs aren't my cup of tea) so I was super excited to choose my dress and get my best heels on.

We started the night with a warm welcome and some pictures on the stairs, mingling, gorgeous canapés of veggie goodness for me and bubbling prosecco. Might I mention the free wine?

I chatted to almost too many people to name in one post which was sooo incredibly lovely as it's great to be getting to know people in the northern blogging scene, including some lovely gals I recognised already from Twitter such as Emma from Harmony Blaze and Bex, who I met at the Bloggers Blog Awards in October!

After receiving a number when I arrived, we were split into two groups for surprise cocktail making! Even though I've worked on a few bars, I've never made a cocktail so this was a new, tipsy, sweet, hilarious experience haha. We made two cocktails through the night; a martini with a flaming orange peel and a gin spin on the Mojito, my favourite cocktail.

I took some videos which are still being edited into a vlog so keep your eyes peeled for that on my Youtube channel in the next few days!

Somewhere in the middle of drinking cocktail #2, everyone was cracking up over Mean Girls quotes (possibly the most quotable movie ever) and my dress definitely suffered a few spillages haha. I had to dip out a few minutes early which sucked because by this time I was so tempted to make a night of it, to stay in Leeds! The atmosphere of the whole night was great.

My dress fit beautifully to my shape, but I think I ordered a size too big! I did find a lipstick that matched the shade of red on my dress, SEVENTEEN's 'Roses are Red' which topped off the festive feeling to the outfit. Everyone looked beautiful and we realised that the dresses everyone had chose, somehow showed a little of our individual personalities.

Bon Prix on the Rocks was one of the best events I've been to for sure and now I'm in the festive mood! Thanks for the dress Bon Prix and thank you to Jennie for inviting me! You can see Bon Prix's write up on the post here. ♥

Are you off to any events this Winter? I'd love to hear about it!

9 Independent Brands to Shop this Christmas

I was in Leeds this weekend, pushing between people doing their Christmas shopping on my way to the Bon Prix on the Rocks cocktail party where everyone was dressed to the nines in sequins and lace, (post to follow)! The Christmas markets have started up already and towering fairy lights stop the city from going dark at night now (which is at about 4:30pm), so it seems that Christmas is on our doorstep!

Last year there was a campaign going around that you might have heard of, to 'shop small' this year. Supporting smaller brands and artists is so important for us to be able to keep going with our work!

I don't know about you but I much prefer something hand crafted than store-bought (as nice as store bought gifts can be), there's something more special about a gift bought from an individual who's put their time into making the product- especially when they're all unique!

I've done some digging and rounded up a few of my favourite small, independent artists and brands that have some amazing must-haves for your Christmas shopping, or just for yourself this year! Click the names to go to their store. In no order:
With the simple tagline of "We make things we like, influenced by other things we like, in collaboration with people we like", their shop has everything from homeware to enamel pins, clothing and patches in a gritty traditional tattoo style that I love. They even do babywear!

Victoria Clare Gray
Victoria is an artist from the Lake District who works mainly in pen, ink and print. Taking inspiration and reference from the nature around her she creates these beautiful designs, drawn and screen printed in her own home studio by herself! As everything is handmade (minus the pins) you're getting a slightly unique product in every purchase which I adore.

Jade Phoenix's 'The Goodness Guide'
Not a brand, but a wonderful woman showing how to live without cruelty. This 133 page e-book is something I use personally- chock full of vegan recipes, health info and vegan beauty tips (some crazy things that I didn't even know you could do), this book is the perfect gift for someone wanting to head towards or already in the vegan lifestyle. You can read my interview with Jade here!

George Townley
An illustrator and designer from the UK who studied for a stint in Cali takes his movie inspired art to Etsy, where you can purchase high quality prints and sets. Basing his work on characters, plots and cult movies these awesome designs are a must have for collectors and movie nerds like meeee!

Serpents Club
I LOVE this shop so much. An independent, eco conscious jewellery brand sells hand crafted jewellery made by Emily, in Manchester. She sources gorgeous crystals to create some beautiful individual pieces such as necklaces and rings- but it doesn't stop there with various affordable shampoo bars and the option to plant a tree for £1 with your order. Amaaaazing!

Goldisocks
These heirloom dolls are something a little more sentimental this christmas. Bigger in real life than they appear in the photographs, every detail in these dolls is sewn by Donna from the North West of the UK. Hand embroidered with little heart lips and with clothes that are sewn from scratch, these dolls will become something you keep for years to come. 20% of profits from each order goes to Macmillian Cancer, what's not to love?

Punky Pins
Big in the blogosphere, Punky Pins is what it says on the tin- illustrated enamel pins and perfect patches to customise any piece of clothing! Based in the North East of the UK, Punky Pins was founded by Claire Whalt who still runs this independent business. I'm loving the Stranger Things pins at the moment!

Hallow Collective
Another UK based company, Hallow Collective is a small brand I've been following on Instagram for a few years. It's been awesome to see their range of products expand, similar to the vibe of Red Temple Prayer. "We're two friends creating things we love, with a weakness for killer tees and leather covered in patches." They stock badass jewellery, printed slogan tee's, mugs and more.

Memo Illustration
From homeware to greetings cards, totes and prints. Helen, from the UK screen prints these western designs in her own home so you know each product has been cared for and hand crafted! I'm loving the cowboy/pin up vibe her products give and I'm always keeping my peepers on her shop for new products.

I might do another post like this, this month if you found this helpful! I can't believe the talent of creatives out there and all this hunting has really got me inspired to do more with my creativity and illustrations. Maybe this time next year I'll have a store set up ready for your Christmas shopping.

Who's your favourite independent business to buy from? Let me know! If you liked this you might like my Bedroom & Workspace Tour or my Autumn Homeware Wishlist.

Do You Need a Niche to be Successful?

As bloggers, we're always told that we need a niche. Categorise your ideas so you can target them at a specific audience- but we're not robots who can tap out seven hundred words on only eyelashes or skincare every day. Beauty is one of the largest and most successful 'niches' out there but to that I say WHAT'S GOOD? Literally, what else is good? As people, we have other interests, hobbies, talents- and so do our readers.

I know it's helpful for people to know that if they need help with a specific topic, they can take a peep at your latest posts but do we really all need to be sorted to be successful? If our readers have different hobbies and obsessions, more interests than just beauty and lifestyle, surely we could and should provide for that too.

It can get a little boring constantly writing about the same thing, hence why I personally don't fit myself into the typical, ideal blogger mould. To me, it's better to be a one man band than a one trick pony, even if you're a magical pony who's really good at that trick.

You don't have to fit into the cliques that are already out there, it doesn't make you any worse a blogger, it doesn't mean that you'll never be successful.

Some of the greatest bloggers I follow have an eclectic mix of content on their blog from refined life advice, to rambling about where they went last week or their latest beauty obsession and I love it. To me, a blogger who isn't afraid to show more than one side of themselves is the most interesting!

My long time love is Rhianna from Robowecop. who covers everything from travel to beauty and life. Areeba from Not Your Type is another gal for blurring the line between niched posts and personal, inspiring thoughts (not to mention her amazing art).

Areeba's art journal
Niched blogs can be great in their own way, don't get me wrong, especially when the writer is talented like luxury-orientated Victoria from In the Frow or Tara from Cattitude & Co who talks about all things FEMALE from periods to equality, you name it (and some of her life). I love an easy on the eyes, curated Instagram too, but it doesn't make sense taking the most beautiful photo you've ever taken and never letting it see the light of day because it doesn't 'fit' your theme.

Let the world see just how extensively you can write and how much you can talk about topics people didn't even think you were aware of. Spread all the knowledge you have, it costs nothing! Debate and tackle things people are afraid of, niched or not.

Use your platform in a way that reflects you entirely and makes you happy, beam S U N B E A M S into your work. It's like I mentioned in my last post, "don't waste time talking about things you don't want to talk about".

So do you need a niche to climb the blogging ladder? Maybe you prefer to have one, or only read niched blogs. Maybe you like to ramble as I do and share alllllll of your crazy interests with everybody (I don't know where to stop haha). Whether you have a niche or not, as long as you're writing about what you like, likeminded people will value you and your writing for that. It's a win-win in my eyes.

Let me know what you think about this in the comments please, I'm super interested to hear everyone's opinions.

Because, The Internet

No- not the awesome Childish Gambino album of 2013. You may have noticed that there's been some radio silence over here for the last two weeks! Don't worry, I haven't fallen out of love with blogging or spewing a million of my thoughts online, quite the opposite.

I decided it was time for a little break from my corner of the internet. Just for a week or so, no scheduling, no excessive time spent online and no worrying. We all need a little digital detox sometimes, right? Sometimes it just takes a few extra deadlines to pull your eyes away from the internet for a while and almost always, this is a good thing.

In my two weeks away from the blog I:

Binged a buttload of episodes of Flaked, made a good start on an art project for a client, spent time with family (just yesterday we headed into the Lake District, one of my favourite places on Earth and had a day out), learned how to make some really nice soups, carved a pumpkin, changed my hair colour (finally!), got over half way through my book, and learned that it's okay to withdraw from certain aspects of your life for a while. ESPECIALLY, if it's going to make you come back with a fiery passion that you totally took for granted before.

PURPLEEEEE!
Boats at Fell Foot

I used to feel anxious if a post wasn't going up, apologetic if my Sunday Post wasn't ready on time but now I realise that nobody is going to mind if you take a break! As much as I absolutely love curating this little part of the internet and making new friends, it's okay to have a breather.

"Stop worrying about how many people follow you online and start worrying about the quality of people who follow you. Don't waste your time reading articles about how to get more followers. Don't waste time following people online because you think it'll get you somewhere. Don't talk to people you don't want to talk to and don't talk about stuff you don't want to talk about."

Do what you love and love what you do. Whether that's writing everyday, keeping up with your fave people online, spending time in nature or throwing your phone into a bin for the week. As long as it makes you happy, do it.

People will always forgive you for taking time out (often a lot easier than you forgive yourself), some may not even notice! You only have to put up with the imaginary pressure you put on yourself until you decide not to. It was realising this that made me put down my phone for a while and prioritise other stuff.

I have a bunch of wonderful, amazing friends and opportunities that wouldn't have come to me if it wasn't for blogging but after this little digital detox, I won't be putting as much pressure on myself to be perfect. All because, the internet.

Do you feel pressure to do things sometimes that nobody has even asked you to do? When is the last time you took a break?
