Kill It with Kindness | Discrimination & Gossiping

Orange and yellow hand lettering

I truly believe the roots of all evil are 1. money and 2. intolerance. See the thing with intolerance is that to combat it, you don't even have to participate, talk about or enjoy the thing you can't stand, but simply tolerate it.

Tolerating is the simplest of all tasks, requiring only that you eat up your disputes for the sake of peace. Of course, if the thing you can't stand is hurting people, then there are grounds to stand up against it, but if the thing that you hate is someone's religion, someone's blog or even change of hair colour then the best thing you can do is stay shutum.

To discriminate against someone for anything is to believe that you are better than them. Does this negative emotion or way of thinking serve you? Are you putting energy into gossiping about someone when you could be putting it into bettering yourself? Do you really want or need that negativity in or around you?
Everyone in the world has bitched or moaned about people or groups of people before (we're all hypocrites) but noticing the error of your ways or making a small conscious effort to be kinder is the first step towards not just tolerance but acceptance- to realise that you are no better than anybody else regardless of beliefs or ways of life, perhaps one of the most noble things a human can do.

I sound like the butterflies and rainbows girl from Mean Girls, I know (see here haha). There are too many people on Earth for there to never be conflicts of interest but change starts in your smallest social circles! Choose not to be unkind about someone. If they could do with your feedback or you want to bring something to their attention, do it in a way that doesn't hurt or exploit them.

They are just as human as you are and if they don't express kindness themselves, chances are they were never taught to value it, or have never received any.

girl carrying pink peonies

The world we live in is too small and life is too short to go around belittling people- one day you might be on the other end of the stick and you can imagine how that feels. Anger creates anger just as kindness creates kindness! A chain of happy days starts with you! Just as women should uplift and celebrate women, on our most human level we should support and praise each other if we ever want peace to reign over war.

Not putting yourself on a pedestal (whether you realise it or not) is fundamental in our steps towards acceptance.

So kill it with kindness. Kill the voice in your head that thrives on bitching and gossiping by giving someone a genuine compliment. Accept constructive criticism without taking personal offence and learn that even you have made mistakes that you don't deserve to be pulled up on a thousand times. List what you are grateful for to take your mind away from what other people are doing and work on the pitfalls in yourself instead of discriminating against someone else's.

If all else fails, and nobody is getting hurt, ignore the thing that you hate. Ignore it completely because there are a million things worthy of your attention instead and for gods sake- don't put snide comments on the internet. You might find yourself brushed over for amazing opportunities (or in a disappointing meeting with your manager).

What are your thoughts on this?

Wild Swimming in Windermere 🌻 Photo Diary // Journal

underwater rocks, floating in lake windermere

Yesterday was one of the loveliest days of my life, hands down. Not much beats soaking up sunshine in nature, spending the day making friends with strangers and trekking down little footpaths to enjoy clear, warm(ish) waters. The Lake District is where I grew up, so being in familiar surroundings made yesterday just that much better.

Alex and I headed by train to Windermere, one of my favourite places in the Lake District, to have a swim and get some well deserved chill time as we've both just finished our degrees (I got a 2:1!!). The weather was a fine 25-28C and I could feel my legs radiating heat on the lake shore whenever I stepped out of the water.

Around us were a few families cooking up kebab sticks on disposable barbecues, sipping on beer and splashing around in the lake. It was pretty peaceful until around dinner time when a few more people had the same idea, but to be in like-minded company was sweet.

As kids we're always told not to talk to strangers but how else are we supposed to make friends?! While swimming I met a guy called Ayjuan (sorry if you ever read this and I've spelled it wrong, haha) who was from Mexico, visiting the Lake District to have a 'break from life', and a young girl called Olivia from Poland.

A woman who had an awesome American accent was painting on the shore which made me completely regret not bringing my watercolours to make some art! We had a swim together and her husband who was kayaking sailed up before she got up on the back and drifted off for a while.

I've been canoeing before but the thought of kayaking terrifies me a little haha, being stuck in that tiny hole with the possibility of rolling under? No thank YOOOOOU. Very peaceful to watch, nonetheless.

Looking up at the sky, letting myself just float and be free was one of the nicest experiences of this year. I was careful to keep an eye on the treetops so I knew how far out I was drifting, as some of the Lakes in the Lake District (Coniston especially) are known to have sudden drops in depth. Definitely something to remember if you're thinking of wild swimming here or aren't a very good swimmer!

Surprisingly the water was alright [see videos here and here] when you got used to it, though only the top few centimetres were properly warmed by the sun! NO pool, ever can beat swimming in a lake. Not even mineral treated spa water, sorry Centerparcs.

My hair actually felt conditioned when I ran a brush through it later on, unlike salty beach tangles.

We headed back to the station after a long, lazy, well-rested afternoon, taking a short-cut up a single road into the centre of Windermere. As it was Sunday, the town wasn't super busy and we were able to mosey without getting in anyones way.

I stopped a few times to take pictures of beautiful colour palettes for illustration reference (as you might know I like to do from reading my Instagram) and petted a couple of dogs who ran up to us from the drive of a very swanky looking woodland home.

We boarded the train which was thankfully delayed, or we'd have had to wait at the station for forty more minutes and stupidly had forgotten to pack extra water so we were preeetty thirsty!

Wishing that I could go back to the moments of being in the water because as I write this, it's a sweltering 28 degrees. We've been BLESSSSED with such good weather this weekend! Just in time, before Alex and I move into a new place and have to spend a week packing indoors.

If you ever get the chance to visit the Lake District and want to swim, I'd recommend Conistion, Windermere, Fell Foot and Buttermere. A lot of Windermere's shore is privately owned so head to the Outdoor Adventure Centre and walk through the field towards the shore (public access). If you're in Coniston there are plenty of jettys and car parks so you can stay as long as you like. Fell Foot has the cutest little café but gets quite busy on sunny days!

I've also heard Loch Lomond is one of the top outdoor swimming spots in the UK, which we visited last year.

How have you spent this glorious weekend? Have you visited the Lakes before?

My Copper IUD (No Hormones) | Three Year Update

lying in bed with leaves

When I was 18 I decided to use the non-hormonal, copper IUD. Mainly for my sanity, as hormonal contraception was driving me up the wall and the perk of having no period wasn't enough to justify crying for no reason more often than I changed my underwear. YA FEEL?!

If you want to read about why I chose the IUD and how my experience was with insertion, aftercare and cramps then see here! The following is a little update and some answers to questions I've been asked about my IUD over the last year or so.

It's been three and a half years since having the non-hormonal coil (IUD) put in and I can no longer feel the strings, but I'm also not pregnant so no worries there! If you have the coil and can't feel your strings, chances are they've tucked themselves up around your cervix and it's nothing to worry about- but if for peace of mind (to check that it hasn't come out), you need a doctor to take a look then I'd recommend doing that. It's super quick and more strange than uncomfortable (a doctor feeling your inside) but worth it if you're worried.

Three years on and I've not had any pregnancy, my periods settled to a regular pattern within about 6 months for the first time since I got them, even when I wasn't on anything at all, and my cramps are no harder to get through than they were as a teen. Some periods are slightly heavier than others but I believe that's just how my body works!

It used to freak me out to know that there's a little 'T' of metal in me, but I can't feel it at all and never have been able to.

I honestly haven't a single qualm about this method of contraception and I'm so happy that my body is on it's own natural cycle. When I was on the depo injection I would cry so often and feel so low. Ridding myself of artificial hormones is the best decision I've ever made for my body, along with deciding to go vegan, and I'd never, ever look back!

My IUD expires in seven more years and I know that even though right now I wouldn't dream of having children before then, if I took it out my fertility would return to normal right away. What a perk. I should also mention that since getting the coil, the girls in my family and some of my friends have got it too and also had no problems!

If you have any questions about the copper coil/IUD feel free to drop me a comment or e-mail me! Nothing is too TMI, don't worry! xx

10 Things I Feel Grateful For Lately 🙌

Reading while sipping coffee flatlay

It can be hard sometimes, especially when in a routine of seeing the same things and people everyday, to feel grateful for the experiences that so quickly become mundane. Have you ever heard the phrase "One man's trash is another man's treasure"? To see value in the simplest of moments is just as valuable to our inner growth as knowing when to cut ties with negative sources.

When life gets slow or boring it's important to forcibly sprinkle gratitude into our everyday life in order to really appreciate things. Feel low? Gratitude. Feeling like life is unfair? Gratitude. Seeing the light in the lowest of situations is a skill that is soooo valuable to develop! It's how I stay happy! Of course, it's no cure for depression but sure helps me to keep my head above water. Know that you deserve to feel good!

Here are some things I've been feeling grateful for lately:

Good health

Asthma and allergies may reign over me somedays but I'm grateful for good health and medication. The fact that I'm in a place where I have access to free doctors and nurses is amazing. Health truly is EVERYTHING, so I'm filled with gratitude that I can walk, talk, breathe and wake up okay!

My little plants

My bathroom is abundant in plants, from cacti to succulents in terrariums and the herbs I've been growing for the past few months. I was also gifted a bonsai tree for my birthday this year that I love so much! They breathe life into my house (literally) and watering them all everyday is somewhat therapeutic.

The days when I'm not anxious

Since anaphylaxis in April I've had a couple of bouts of anxiousness each week. When I go a whole day or two without a tingly feeling or panic, it deserves the utmost appreciation! Focussing on the better days puts the bad out of my mind. I know I'll be back to 100% in no time at all.

white backless dress and bunny ears

Morning coffee

The simplest of them all- a coffee in the morning. The taste of a good strong roast while still under the sheets, always with my boyfriend, is a moment I like to linger in. I'm grateful for the quiet, warm moments at the beginning of the day. Also for when I don't spill the coffee on my white bedsheets (never).

YOU

You who is reading this. Very cheesy, I know, but thank you for reading my blog and spending time in this corner of the internet! It feels so great to be able to blog again after winding up my degree, and this space wouldn't be the same without you! The connections and friends I've made through this platform are so special to me.

Sudden inspiration

Feeling suddenly inspired or motivated keeps me going! It can sometimes be weeks or days between hits of inspiration- some periods last longer than others and I'm grateful for every second of it and what my mind is capable of creating in those moments.

Good vegan food

All vegan food is good food, from these yummy pastry parcels to a quick scramble. I love you food. *drools*

The internet

Thank you, Internet, for the opportunity to share what I please, as I please and connect with people from all over the world. I often scroll Instagram mindlessly, but when the people I follow are brimming with ideas, have feeds filled with beautiful photography, it fills up that bucket of ideas to the brim. Social media platforms let me discover people who are likeminded, catch cute viral videos and with this I can see the smallest acts of compassion, the highlight reel of humanity.

Water

Whether I'm floating in a body of it, tip toe-ing through rocks or sipping it from a bottle. Water is so fun to be in and gives me all types of energy (in my body and my soooooooul, groovy).

The Lake District

Although travelling is always on my mind, the Lake District always feels like home. Being here restores me, centres me and it's natural beauty is something to behold. I recently spent a day in Ambleside with my family. I feel so grateful to have that memory!

IG x Creative Debuts | Meeting Instagram's Co-Founder

Cocktail on yellow table
Creative Debuts credit

Hello lovely peopleeeee! What a crazy couple of weeks it has been. This year has been (so far) the busiest, craziest learning curve of my life but it hasn't come without it's perks. At the start of this month I was invited to travel down to to Shoreditch, London to meet up with a bunch of other young artists as part of an event with Instagram and Creative Debuts

Creative Debuts provide a free platform for young artists to exhibit their work, and they also hold awesome events weekly to join together creative minds. Honestly the whole thing made me want to move to Shoreditch, it was all so ALIVE!

Mike Krieger (the co-founder of Instagram) attended too and we had a nice chat about how he'd caught our skies on a good day (what's more British than talking about the weather?) before he headed to give a small welcome speech to the rest of the creatives and I.

Drawing on table from above

There were free cocktails, which were super yummy, and a DJ to keep the chill vibes going. They even had a table full of fresh pizza for us alongside about a million pens to draw with. Amazingly, mini canvases lined the tables with our Instagram handles painted on, ready for us to make some 'mini-masterpieces' in lieu of #FreeArtFriday!

The energy in the room was unbelievable as everyone got stuck into making tiny creations. I work in a studio space but with everyone on tight deadlines, high energy isn't always our forté. This was the opposite.

Give a group of artists free reign over a bunch of mess-making materials and you end up with beautiful artwork, drawings on tables, new friends and incredible energy!

It was so lovely to be surrounded by people who feel as passionately about creating as I do. Talking to them about how long they'd been drawing and why made me realise even more that creativity, as an outlet, is so close to the hearts of everyone who uses it.  The talent in the room definitely made me question myself, haha!

During his talk, Mike humbly touched on how Instagram came about, why, and his role in the making of the app which has really revolutionised how we share our work in the modern world. I am admittedly, slightly obsessed with it...

It's hard to believe that such a massive platform came from an idea in someone's head- imagine waking up and having an idea that would change so much about the creative industry, let alone your own life. Having the idea is one thing but putting it in place, bringing it to fruition while turning it into something everyone can enjoy is something I truly admire.

In fact, it has inspired me two write down every idea I get no matter how small or 'bad' I believe them to be at the time.

And no, I did not ask him to switch the app's feed to chronological order (cough, wink), although it was nice to share ideas and feedback about the platform such as being able to:

- preview your feed before you post (they just added an archive option which I will be using ALL THE TIME THANK YOU INSTAGRAM)
- move your grid around
- etc, etc.

Heading home was sad as I could've stayed all night! My fingers are crossed that some places up North will spot this post and choose to hold events similar to this, especially you Manchester! The music scene is so prominent in most cities I've visited, but why not the art scene?

You don't have to be a professional artist to make art. It starts with the most simple of steps!

Thank you so much Creative Debuts and Instagram for the invite and I'm sure I will be seeing you next time in London! I'll be heading down there again this month for the Blogosphere Blog Awards (STOKED) where I'm nominated for Lifestyle Blog of the Year alongside some of my favourite bloggers. Literally blown away, haha. Thank you to anybody who has voted for me or nominated me, my heeeeeart.

What do you use Instagram for? Do you think they could make it better? Also let me know if you know of any other events like this, I'd love to go!

How To Start Making Art (Inspiration & Supplies)

Sea themed painting in watercolours

I talked a little on my Instagram the other day about how creativity is more of a natural human instinct than we think. To quote one of my favourite books right now:

"Human beings have been creative beings for a really long time- long enough and consistently enough that it appears to be a totally natural impulse. Consider this fact: The earliest evidence of recognisable human art is forty thousand years old. The earliest evidence of human agriculture, by contrast, is only ten thousand years old. Which means that somewhere in our collective evolutionary story, we decided it was way more important to make attractive, superfluous items than it was to learn how to regularly feed ourselves." -Big Magic, Liz Gilbert

To me this is so true! I've been making (usually a mess) for as long as I can remember and feel like making art or being creative is something that everyone can and should enjoy. So many people I know stopped making things because they didn't choose Art & Design in school, or were told they shouldn't because they'd fail.

There's really NO right or wrong in drawing and painting and making art, especially if its for the sole purpose of 'because I want to'. So here are a few ways you can start making art!

Do it for you

It's hard to find the energy for something and feel positive about it if you know you're just creating it to share with people- the fear of judgement often overrides the happiness that should come from getting messy, whether it's sculpting, painting, filling a sketchbook, re-drawing your favourite cartoons or writing poetry. So do it for you, because you want to and by all means share your creations if you feel like it.

Don't plagiarise

Inspiration is fuel in the fire of creating, but there's a fine line between taking inspiration and taking someone's work/style completely. Mainly if you're thinking of selling your lil masterpieces, it's important to make sure you don't copy any elements of somebody else's work (especially large companies like Disney, or company logos). Colour palettes, topics etc are okay! The best way to make sure you don't accidentally copy is to take inspiration from many different sources (rainy day movies, books, cultures, artists), or just run with an idea that's completely your own. Dreams are a weird and wonderful source for ideas.

Think about your print turtle painting

Find something you're passionate about

When it comes to finding inspiration for a big project, find something you really care about! Whether that's the California skate scene, shapes or colours in certain cultures, drawing portraits of rockstars or something more serious like equality. It's easy to make lots of work when you feel compelled to!

Materials don't have to be expensive

Even now, making a little money from illustrating, some of the materials I use are quite cheap. I'm only just beginning to splurge on good paper but the paint palette I've used all year cost me about £5. It doesn't matter how much your materials cost. Just have fun :)

Carry on

Don't get frustrated if things aren't going or looking how you had in your head. Like I said earlier there's no right or wrong, having a million sketchbooks is satisfying and really great to look back on. Remember that the more you practice, the more things are going to shape up how you imagine. If you want to learn more- try Youtube or Skillshare for tutorials.

I hope these tips help you and that you come across some inspiration easily! Making art is so therapeutic! There's a reason that the 'adult colouring book' trend became so huge. I'd love love love to see what you create or if you make art already, leave me a link to your work in the comments!

Do you have any tips for people just starting out?
